IRR Calculator

Calculate Internal Rate of Return for investment projects

Tool Guide

About the Online IRR (Internal Rate of Return) Calculator

The online IRR (Internal Rate of Return) calculator quickly computes the internal rate of return (IRR) for a set of cash flow data, making it ideal for investment return estimation, project return evaluation, borrowing cost analysis, and similar scenarios. Input is simple: one number per line, and the system automatically identifies each period's cash flow in order.

This tool uses the same calculation approach as the Excel IRR function, so the results can be checked directly against Excel, reducing the time spent building tables and debugging formulas by hand.

Tip: The IRR result is a per-period rate of return by default (e.g. monthly cash flows produce a monthly IRR). To annualize it, convert according to your business basis (for example, monthly figures are often multiplied by 12 for an approximate annualized comparison).

Features

1. Line-by-Line Cash Flow Input

Supports pasting multiple lines of data, one cash flow amount per line, making it easy to copy directly from Excel, statements, or reports.

2. One-Click IRR Calculation

Click "Calculate IRR" to output the per-period internal rate of return, ideal for quickly comparing different projects or installment plans.

3. One-Click Example Fill

Built-in sample data lets you click "Fill Example" to instantly experience the calculation flow and quickly understand the input format.

4. Copy Results

Supports one-click copying of results for easy pasting into financial spreadsheets, analysis documents, or communication materials.

How to Use the IRR Calculator

Step 1: Paste or enter your cash flow data in the input box, one number per line.

Step 2: Make sure the data contains at least one positive and one negative value, otherwise a valid IRR cannot be obtained.

Step 3: Click "Calculate IRR" and wait for the system to return the result.

Step 4: View the rate of return in the results area, and click "Copy Result" as needed for further analysis.

Step 5: To recalculate, click "Clear" and enter again.

Example scenario: Borrow 30,000 yuan, then repay -5,240 yuan each month for 6 periods. The tool can first compute the monthly IRR; to compare annualized costs, convert further according to your business basis.

Use Cases

It can be used for project investment return evaluation, installment-loan cost estimation, wealth-management cash flow analysis, repayment-plan comparison, and other business scenarios that need a quick estimate of the internal rate of return.

Online IRR Calculator FAQ

What is IRR (Internal Rate of Return)?

IRR (Internal Rate of Return) is the discount rate at which a cash flow's net present value equals 0. It is commonly used to measure the true return level of a project, investment, or installment plan.

Why does it show "Data error, please check the input"?

Common causes are non-numeric characters in the input lines, too many blank lines, or all positive / all negative numbers. Please make sure each line is a valid number and includes at least one positive and one negative value.

Are this tool's results the same as Excel?

The calculation logic is consistent with the Excel IRR function, so results can usually be compared directly. Any tiny differences are mostly related to decimal places, input precision, or the period basis.

Does it support importing Excel files directly?

It does not import files directly at the moment, but you can copy the cash flow column from Excel and paste it into the input box, giving an experience close to importing.

What does a negative IRR mean?

It usually indicates that the overall cash flow return is insufficient to cover the initial investment, common in loss-making projects or low-return plans.

Can it calculate data with many periods?

Yes. As long as you enter "one number per line", it can calculate 5, 12, 36, or more periods.
