Introduction to the Gaokao

The Gaokao first appeared in 1952 and was suspended from 1966 to 1976 due to the Cultural Revolution. In 1977, the Gaokao was restored and gradually developed into its current form.

With the reform and development of Chinese education, the subjects and format of the Gaokao have also undergone multiple adjustments and changes. Usually, the Gaokao exam is held on June 7-8 each year.

In recent years, some regions have implemented new Gaokao reforms, such as adding an oral component to Gaokao English and introducing comprehensive evaluation admissions, to more comprehensively assess students' overall abilities.
