How to Choose a Suitable English Name

1. Choose an English name based on its purpose

For formal occasions (such as work or studying abroad), choose a concise, easy-to-read, international name — for men: David, Michael, John, James, Robert;

for women: Emily, Sophia, Jessica, Anna, Grace. Avoid overly flashy or slangy names, such as "Spike" (which means a sharp point) or "Pixie" (a small fairy).

For games and social media, try personalized or unique English names for greater recognizability, such as ShadowHunter, LunaSky, BlazeX, StormRider,

or coin a distinctive name by combining English words, such as NightFury, CyberFox, NeonGho.

Different names convey different impressions, so you can choose one that suits your personality:

Gentle and refined: Ethan, Lucas, Oliver / Olivia, Isabella, Eleanor; Lively and cheerful: Jack, Leo, Ryan / Lily, Chloe, Zoe;

Mysterious and distinctive: Damien, Axel, Xavier / Raven, Selene, Astrid; Cute and playful: Tommy, Benji, Finn / Bella, Daisy, Mia.

2. Avoid the pitfalls: names you shouldn't use

Avoid names that easily cause misunderstanding. Some English names may carry negative connotations in English-speaking countries or invite unnecessary misunderstanding, for example:

Dick (formerly a nickname for Richard, but now carrying a vulgar meaning), Karen (in Western slang, refers to a "complaining, entitled woman"), Candy (easily mistaken for a stage name in the adult industry).

Avoid names that are too complex or obscure. Overly long or rare names may be hard for foreigners to remember or spell, such as Maximilian, Theophilus, Euphemia.

The modern workplace tends to favor simple, direct names, such as Jack, Leo, Emma, Sophia.

Don't directly transliterate your Chinese name. Using Pinyin directly as an English name can cause pronunciation difficulties or unclear meaning, such as Zhijian, Qiang, Xiaoyu — names that are hard for non-native Chinese speakers to pronounce.

The right approach is to pick an English name that sounds similar: 王强 (Qiang) → Charles / Kevin, 李娜 (Li Na) → Lina / Nina.
